There are many schools that teach martial arts as if it were a sport or competition. I feel that this teaches kids that life is about winners and losers. I have been teaching kids for close to 25 years, and one thing I can tell you is that the real winners in life are those that can bring the best of themselves to the table, each and every time. Those that can treat others opinions, skills, and differences with respect and dignity will go much farther in life than someone that wins a few medals in a tournament.
At Tampa Family Martial Arts, we encourage all students to give 100% in every class. We focus on the details. We want each student to leave a class having gained something, regardless of how small. Whether it is about a technique, a mindset, or a “wow” moment about Goju Ryu, they will each have gained and grown a little that day.
Finally, it all has to start in the home with the parents. If you think you can drop your kids off here and them learn about respect, commitment, and tenacity without the support from you, then you are sadly mistaken. These are life lessons that we need to be committed partners together. With your support and commitment, we can give your child a chance to grow up in this world to be a happy, productive, and contributing member of society.
Children from the ages of 6 and up are accepted into our program. Younger kids are excluded because I feel they need a couple of years of actual schooling to really understand the basics of the teacher- student relationship. Our schedule is shown below:
The online classes are absolutely free for the first 30-days. If you invite a friend, you get another 30-days!
This will allow your child to see what they think about Martial Arts until we can return to normal classes. This will provide your kids with constructive, positive input as well as some great exercise during these times. They will learn numerous words of the Japanese language and not even know they are learning it. This will teach them about discipline that can carry-over to other online learning Best of all, it will keep them occupied while you do something else (not too far away, of course)
I founded Tampa Family Martial Arts in February 2003 because I wanted to form a dojo that taught traditional Okinawan Goju Ryu karate. To those of you who may not know, there are many schools out there that teach what I call "hybrid" martial arts. By that I mean that the original style has been modified, adjusted, and tweaked to conform to various cultures and lifestyles. What you end up with is a shadow of what once was.
This dojo is affiliated with the IOGKF (International Okinawan Goju ryu Karate Federation). The hoshin of the organization is "to preserve Okinawan Goju Ryu karate as an intagible cultural treasure." We teach the art as it was passed down from one generation to the next, with a direct lineage to the founder of Goju Ryu, Chojun Miyagi. We do not alter....we do not compromise.
For those of you who are new to this and are considering training and study of the martial arts, remember to think about the investment of time and energy you are going to commit. It takes years. It is not a destination, but a journey. Make sure that, along with your commitment, the school you are about to join is not a "factory". Tampa Family Martial Arts is a small school. I personally have a full time career outside of this school, and I formed it because of my passion of the art, not to make money. I love teaching, but more than that, I love learning. I made a commitment to my students that I would continually improve my skills and abilities by attending regular seminars, or Gasshukus, to enhance my own skills and bring what I learn back to the dojo. I make this promise to anyone considering our school: you will receive some of the best training for traditional Okinawan Goju Ryu karate found anywhere. I personally take pride in watching my students develop and grow both as karateka and as individuals. I also have that desire to develop and grow myself, and I put that passion into every single class.
